Family planning or birth control is the practice that allows people to make informed decision about the number of children in a family and determine the interval of pregnancies. It’s the practice of preventing unintended pregnancies through the use of contraceptive or contragestive methods.

                               Benefits

1. It allows parents to invest more in each child. Children with fewer siblings tend to stay in school longer than those with many siblings.

2. It helps reduce unwanted pregnancies in adolescents. Pregnant adolescents are more likely to have preterm or low birth –weight babies.

3. It helps to prevent the spread of Sexually Transmited Diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

4. It helps prevent pregnancy-related health risk in women. Evidence suggests that women with have more than 4 children are at increased risk of maternal mortality.

5. It helps in reducing infant mortality. Infants of mothers who die as a result of giving birth also have a greater risk of death and poor health.

6. It helps slow population growth.

Why did I choose medicine?

alainwambe.blogspot.com

To me practicing medicine is not a job, it’s a profession and a vocation. There is nothing more rewarding than putting a smile on a patient’s face. This noble profession is meant for selfless people, people who serve with passion.

They are numerous reasons why I chose to study medicine but the most important one is the passion and respect I have for it. Early in high school when I started thinking about my future career I thought Sciences especially medicine was the career for me. My favorite subjects were Chemistry, Physics and Biology which in my opinion are key subjects to master if you are interested in medical school. I also thought medicine was the most challenging major to study at the university and medical students used to be my role models because of their smartness. Therefore I wanted to be part of them, part of the super-smart, part of the men and women with the white coat. I said to myself  ‘’why not me? I’m smart, I’m talented, I’m hardworking and I’m ready for the challenges it takes to be a Doctor’’. That’s the attitude I adopted in high school and looking back I can say without any doubt that it paid off.

Curiosity also played a role in my decision to study medicine. I wanted to learn about the human body, to know the reasons why people get sick and look for ways to help relieve their suffering. I’m thrilled by the idea of being able to provide relief to someone else’s suffering.

All these reasons led me to consider medicine as a major and thanks to my motivation, determination and hard work I’m where I am today. My medical school adventure continues…
